About CMS

Clara Mohammed School, Inc. is a K4-12th grade Islamic school and Masjid Sultan Muhammad, serving the Milwaukee community for over 50 years. Located in the historic Harambee neighborhood, the school is deeply rooted in the mission of providing faith-based, high-quality education to low-income Muslim families of African descent. Our institution was founded to honor the legacy of Sister Clara Mohammed, wife of the Honorable Elijah Mohammed, who led the Nation of Islam from 1934 to 1975. Inspired by her dedication to educating her own children, Sister Clara’s vision grew into a movement, leading to the establishment of Islamic schools nationwide, including Clara Mohammed School in Milwaukee.

Our Legacy & Community Impact

As an extension of Masjid Sultan Muhammad, the first mosque in Milwaukee, our school plays a vital role in fostering academic excellence, spiritual growth, and community service. The Harambee neighborhood, meaning “pull together” in Swahili, has long been a hub for African American culture, activism, and self-determination. We are proud to continue this legacy by providing an education that integrates Islamic teachings, Arabic language studies, and a rigorous academic curriculum while preparing students for success in both higher education and professional careers.

Who We Serve

Clara Mohammed School primarily serves low-income African American Muslim families who seek an educational environment that aligns with their faith, values, and cultural heritage. Our students come from families who are committed to academic achievement, moral development, and community engagement. With over 70% of our student population being refugees, our diverse classrooms reflect the global Muslim community. We strive to provide a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment where students can grow into confident, knowledgeable, and socially responsible individuals.
